Resume Structure Step by Step

1Header: name, role, contact (email, phone, city), GitHub or portfolio link. Date of birth, address and marital status are optional since the AGG and increasingly left out.
2Profile (3 to 4 lines): years of experience, core stack, two quantified achievements, target role. No empty phrases like "motivated team player", be specific.
3Work experience (reverse chronological): role, company, location, period in MM/YYYY. Per role 3 to 4 quantified bullets, always name the tech stack in the context of the task.
4Education: degree, institution, period. Grade only if very good or fresh out of university. Mention relevant specializations or thesis briefly.
5Tech stack (categorized): languages, frameworks, databases, cloud, tools. Every tool named should reappear in at least one position, otherwise it rings hollow.
6Languages and certificates: language level by CEFR (B2, C1), certificates with issue date (AWS, CKAD, Scrum). No more "fluent", state the exact level.

Recruiter Tips for Software Engineer Resumes

1Quantify every point: "API response time from 480 ms to 120 ms" always beats "improved performance".
2Name the tech stack per role, not just in the skills list. ATS systems weight keywords higher in the context of work experience.
3Combine German and English keywords: job ads in Germany mix both ("Softwareentwickler" and "Software Engineer"). Your resume should too.
4State language levels by CEFR (B2, C1). German recruiters expect the exact level, "fluent" is too vague.
5Put a GitHub or portfolio link in the header. Many tech recruiters check it before the first interview.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Identical bullets across multiple jobs. Looks generic and casts doubt on every other claim.
"Fluent" instead of a CEFR level. In Germany, always state B1, B2, C1 or C2.
A photo out of old habit. Optional since the AGG; better left out for international companies.
Tech buzzwords without evidence. Every tool in the skills list should appear in at least one role.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a software engineer resume be in Germany?+

Two pages maximum. With under 5 years of experience, 1 page is ideal. German recruiters expect a structured resume with a gap-free chronology. Shorten older positions (10 years and more) to 1 to 2 lines and give current roles 3 to 4 quantified points.

Do I need a photo on my resume?+

No. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG), a photo is optional. Traditional German companies still like to see one; international firms and startups do not expect it. Rule of thumb: leave it out for English-language job ads, include a professional photo for the classic Mittelstand.

German or English: which language do I apply in?+

In the language of the job ad. If the ad is in English, an English resume is enough; still mention your German level by CEFR (e.g. German B2). For German ads, always submit a German resume, even if the team works in English: the first screening is often done by HR.

Which ATS keywords matter most for software engineers in 2026?+

The most common matching terms in German job ads: Softwareentwickler / Software Engineer, TypeScript, React, Node.js, CI/CD, Cloud (AWS or Azure), Microservices, Agile and Scrum. Use both the German and the English variant of the role title, many ATS filters only match exact terms.

Does the resume have to be gap-free?+

Yes. Gaps of roughly 2 months or more should be named: training, parental leave, job search or a sabbatical. German recruiters actively ask about them in interviews. An honestly described gap looks far better than a concealed one.
